Silverfish silently destroy books, documents, clothing, wallpaper, and stored items for years before most homeowners notice them. Licensed treatment. Family-safe products. Written warranty. All Brisbane suburbs.
Silverfish are one of Brisbane's most overlooked pests — but among the most damaging over time. They are nocturnal, fast-moving, and highly secretive, which means infestations can run for months or years before they are discovered. By the time most homeowners notice the signs, significant damage has already been done.
Brisbane's warm, humid climate is ideal for silverfish activity year-round. They thrive in roof voids, subfloors, wall cavities, wardrobes, bookshelves, and anywhere moisture and cellulose-based materials are present. Silverfish feed on books, paper documents, wallpaper glue, natural fabrics, dried food, and the starch in plaster and cardboard — the list of what they destroy is extensive.
Unlike cockroaches or rodents, silverfish cause no noise, no obvious droppings, and no smell. They are spotted by chance — a chewed book spine, holes in a shirt, or yellowed wallpaper. By the time you see these signs, the infestation has typically been active for 12–36 months. Early professional treatment is the only reliable way to stop the damage before it reaches your irreplaceable items.
Silverfish feed on anything containing cellulose, starch, sugar, or protein. The damage is gradual, silent, and cumulative — often reaching irreplaceable items before it is noticed.
Silverfish are nocturnal and extremely fast — most Brisbane homeowners never see one directly. These are the physical signs to look for during a home check.
Silverfish scrape and chew in irregular, non-linear patterns. Holes in book pages, notches along fabric edges, and surface scraping on wallpaper are characteristic damage signs.
Silverfish leave yellow staining on the materials they feed on — particularly visible on the edges of book pages, wallpaper, and stored fabrics. Often the first warning sign before visible damage appears.
Silverfish droppings are tiny — about 1mm — and look like small black pepper spots. Found near feeding areas in bookshelves, inside cupboards, and along skirting boards adjacent to paper storage.
Silverfish moult throughout their lives, shedding their silvery scales. A fine silver or grey dust near feeding areas, or tiny translucent shed skins inside drawers, is a direct indicator of active infestation.
Silverfish are nocturnal and fast. If you switch on a bathroom or kitchen light at night and see fast-moving silver insects scattering across the floor or walls, you have an established infestation — not an isolated individual.
Much silverfish activity occurs in roof voids and subfloors where homeowners never look. Damaged insulation, chewed cardboard stored in the roof space, or visible insect activity during a roof void inspection are serious indicators.
Two silverfish species are common across Brisbane. Both cause damage but behave differently — correct identification shapes the treatment approach.
Most Common
The most prevalent silverfish in Brisbane homes — metallic silver-grey, 12–20mm in length, with a distinctive tapered body and three tail filaments. Found in kitchens, bathrooms, roof voids, bookshelves, and wardrobes. Prefers moderate humidity and temperatures between 22–27°C — ideal for Brisbane year-round.
High-Heat Zones
The firebrat is closely related to the silverfish but prefers significantly warmer environments — 35–40°C — making it a common inhabitant of roof voids during Brisbane summers, near hot water systems, and in bakeries or commercial kitchens. Mottled grey-brown in colour rather than metallic silver. Firebrats can cause damage in roof insulation and near hot water units.
Effective silverfish treatment requires reaching the areas where they actually live — not just surface spraying. Our treatment covers every zone from roof void to skirting boards.
Your licensed technician inspects the property for signs of silverfish activity — roof void, subfloor, internal rooms, wardrobes, bookshelves, and kitchen/bathroom areas. Moisture sources and entry points are identified. The species is confirmed (common silverfish vs firebrat) as this affects treatment approach.
The roof void is the primary silverfish harbourage zone in Brisbane homes. A long-lasting insecticide dust is applied throughout the roof void space — dusted into cavities, across insulation, and around timber framing. Dust formulations penetrate areas that liquid sprays cannot reach and remain effective for months.
Subfloor environments — humid, dark, and undisturbed — are a secondary silverfish zone in Brisbane's older homes. Insecticide dust or residual spray is applied to the subfloor framing and soil surface to eliminate silverfish sheltering beneath the house.
A residual insecticide spray is applied to all internal harbourage zones — skirting boards, wall junctions, inside wardrobes, behind and under furniture, bookshelves, and storage areas. Bathroom and kitchen areas receive targeted treatment given their moisture levels.
Every silverfish treatment includes a written 3–6 month warranty. If silverfish activity returns within the warranty period, we return and retreat at no charge. The warranty is documented and given to you before the technician leaves your property.
Most DIY products and many cheaper services only spray skirting boards. Our Standard and Premium treatments include full roof void dust application — the primary silverfish zone that surface treatments can never reach.
Every treatment is carried out by a fully licensed Queensland pest management professional. Our technicians correctly identify the species, select the appropriate product formulation, and apply it safely to every zone.
Every silverfish treatment includes a written warranty. If activity returns within the warranty period, we retreat at no charge. Written — not verbal. Given to you before the technician leaves.
All products are APVMA-registered and selected to be safe in residential environments with children and pets once dry. Your technician advises on any re-entry times and specific precautions for your household.
From $130 for Essential treatment, $250 Standard (includes roof void), $350 Premium (full property including subfloor and outbuildings). The price quoted is the price paid — no surprises on completion.

After professional treatment, these six steps will significantly reduce the risk of re-infestation and protect your valuables long-term.
Ensure roof void ventilation is working — blocked vents create the warm, humid conditions silverfish thrive in. Fix any roof leaks or condensation issues promptly.
Books, documents, and paper items stored in the roof void or garage should be in sealed plastic containers — not cardboard boxes. Cardboard is a direct food source and harbourage for silverfish.
Silverfish are drawn to moisture. Leaking pipes under sinks, bathroom grout cracks, and subfloor drainage issues all create silverfish-attractive conditions. Address moisture problems promptly.
Seasonal clothing stored in wardrobes for months at a time is particularly vulnerable. Use sealed vacuum storage bags or cedar-lined containers for long-term clothing storage.
Transfer flour, oats, rice, pasta, and cereals from their original paper or cardboard packaging into sealed glass or hard plastic containers. This removes both the food source and the cardboard harbourage.
An annual general pest inspection checks for silverfish activity in the roof void, subfloor, and key internal zones — catching re-infestation before it reaches the damaging stage. From $130.

Found silverfish damage in my book collection — some irreplaceable paperbacks had pages chewed. Called these guys and they treated the whole house including the roof void with the dust. Haven't seen a silverfish since and it's been over six months. Highly recommend.
We had silverfish getting into our pantry and damaging the flour and oats. The technician treated the kitchen, all the cupboards, and went up into the roof void too. The Standard package was exactly what we needed. No more silverfish and the written warranty gave us real peace of mind.
Noticed yellow staining on some old fabric curtains and thought it was sun damage. Turns out we had a significant silverfish infestation in the wardrobe. The technician explained everything clearly, treated all the affected areas plus the roof void, and gave us a 6-month warranty. Great service.
